Rail Only yearlies were introduced system-wide from the 22nd July 1979, coinciding with the fare rise of that date. The ESR stations received magnetic strip tickets produced on a very thin plastic card for this specific purpose. Rail Only yearlies were only available as full fare tickets, issued direct from all ESR booking office windows on presentation of a completed season ticket application form.
The three letter code used for the fare type was "YRL".

As far as it is currently known, there were two designs of the Rail Only Yearly.

Yearly tickets were abolished during December 1987.
