There was a standard range of 3 non encoded Bus-Rail and Rail-Bus single tickets specific to the Eastern Suburbs Railway. It was originally hoped that magnetically encoded tickets might be extended to the bus services serving the new Eastern Suburbs Railway at Bondi Junction and Edgecliff interchanges. This would have provided seamless transfer between buses and trains and fully utilized the automatic barriers at the ESR stations. The automatic fare collection system supplied by Cubic Western Data to the PTC relied on credit card sized magnetic tickets which could not conceivably have been issued on board a bus, nor did Cubic Western Data offer such technology. The PTC Bus Division thereafter relied on two types of bus to rail single tickets, those issued by Ultimate machines and blocks of Bus-Rail Singles both being supplied to Waverley, Randwick and Port Botany (later Pagewood) depots.
The first group shown below were Ultimate tickets issued by Queue Conductors stationed at busier stops for INWARDS journies to Bondi Junction or Edgecliff interchanges then train to the City.
The second group below these were issued by the Bus Drivers and were running issues torn from a block. All are identified with a "W" presumably for Waverley depot, and were supplied in a wide variety of shades over time.
Based on pricing, the ultimate tickets were still in use with the fare rise of July 1988 ($2.00) while the tear-off issues remained until at least June 1987 ($1.20). A wide selection of both types shown here represent Adult and Concession fares until these dates. The PTC issues were the shortest lived being replaced by UTA headed stock from July 1980. The initial PTC Adult fare of 35 cents and Half Fare of 15 cents lasted barely one month until the fare rise in July 1979.
